The Former Carnoustie Coastguard Station was used by Her Majesty’s Coastguard Rescue Service from 1999 before being vacated and left derelict.
The design utilizes the existing building’s footprint and ridge height, with an extension to create a Kitchen and living areas. The bedroom accommodation is hosted within the existing footprint. The roof geometry was carefully manipulated to reduce the new houses presence on the site and to be respectful to the neighbouring context. The dramatic roof overhang creates a sheltered external patio space enjoying unspoiled panoramic views across the North Sea.
The new house is energy efficient, with very high levels of insulation and it uses an air source heat pump with underflooring heating. The existing coastguard station walls were retained and provided with a new thermal lining to improve their thermal performance. The majority of the glazing is positioned on the South and East elevations to maximise solar gain and daylight into the property. It features an integrated garage which is accessible off the street and has the main access at the rear of the site to create privacy to the neighbours.
