Home Lodge is Garry’s own house completed in 2022. It is one of four gatehouses of the former Montrose Lunatic Asylum which is now under development as part of our masterplan for Sunnyside Estate. The gatehouse was constructed in the early 1900’s.
The existing gatehouse external fabric was retained, with a new internal lining to provide excellent thermal efficiency. The existing floor was stripped out and replaced with underfloor heating which works in conjunction with a new air source heat pump that provides hot water and space heating. The roof was replaced with new attic trusses to form the master bedroom and associated ensuite and storage above the ground floor accommodation. At the rear of the house is a new timber weatherboard-clad extension to provide further floor space. The cladding is finished in Black, with new contemporary mock sash and case windows in black to contrast the existing white rendered walls of the gatehouse.
The ancillary Bothy is used as a guesthouse and hobby space, featuring a solid fuel stove and timber construction. The entire South facing roof pitch is formed of PV cells which lower the running cost of the house and the ASHP electrical demand. Additionally, this contributes to on-site electric car charging. This forms part of a holistic low energy strategy which we take pride in being part of our company ethos.
