On 1st Nov 2019 the Royal Montrose and the Montrose Mercantile Golf Club (founded in 1879) merged to form the Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf club, making it the 9th oldest golf
club in continuous existence. It is a historic club, with an outdated existing club building that was in dire need for modernisation to support its members following the merger.
The Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club sits on the corner of Triall Drive, Montrose. The site has wide open views over the course and links towards the sea to the East.
Garry has been a keen member of the golf club for several years and we were appointed to design an extension and internal alterations to the existing club building.
The new extension is designed to modernise the existing club building, with a single storey flat roof, overhanging eaves projecting towards the course and strong contrasting material palette providing a high quality, crisp appearance set against the existing stone building. The East elevation to the extension features extensive glazing to maximise daylight and views towards the course and links. This creates beautiful morning light within the seating area. The seating area features a sliding partition system that allows the space to be divided, allowing the club to host multiple functions simultaneously. The bar is positioned to serve both of the spaces from either side. The internal layout was altered to provide upgraded services for the members, including new locker rooms and bathroom facilities.
The Golf Club had the following to say following completion of the project:
“Garry being a member of the Golf Club and a partner of the well-known Adam & Gordon Architects practice was an obvious choice to take on the design of our Club Enhancement – the concept went through many stages mainly due to budget constraints however Garry remained patient throughout the process and at all times encouraged the Club to bring in the ‘wow’ factor that would excite the members and attract golfing visitors. He collaborated with our enhancement team and the main contractor throughout the construction phase and as such was always on hand to tweak design changes to satisfy unforeseen problems and to determine solutions.
The final result is a testament to Garry – the members are enthused by our upgraded premises – the light and airy feel of the building coupled with the comfortable surroundings is superb!
The Enhancement Team at Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club would be happy to recommend Adam & Gordon Architects – they provide a professional service whilst maintaining a friendly and hands-on approach to the project.”
